Wake the Dead is a San Martian favorite for a few reasons. The menu is adorned by a red-and-black color palette and Halloween-esque decor. Themes are always fun when it comes to coffee shops, and this place is no exception. It is right next to the apartments I live at, so that’s a plus as well. I love Wake the Dead because it is both a great place to be entertained as well as a place you can get focused while sipping on some caffeine.
The main room is equipped with a stage that local entertainment often performs on. It is nice because Wake the Dead hosts poetry readings, live music and more. Those looking to get their espresso fix in a more laidback environment can find solace in the study. This is a room where students and locals often get work done over their favorite coffee beverage. The coffee is awesome and the environment keeps you coming back for more.
I always love a coffee house that can give you a piping hot drink with some beautiful latte art.
Latte art is when the barista uses the espresso of a drink as the back drop of a design made with steamed milk. Some times it can look like a flower, a heart or any random pattern. I always find it fun to see what my latte will look like. And let’s face it— it makes for great instagram material. As a Bobcat at Texas State University, I recommend visiting Wake the Dead 100 percent.
Cunningham said he was feeling adventurous during one visit and one of the baristas created a “summertime drink” specifically for him.
“The baristas are all very knowledgeable,” Cunningham said. “They can whip up just about anything or create something of their own for you if you’re feeling experimental.”
